We live in an incredible time. Never, ever in the history of film has the actor had such an opportunity to go beyond the audition room, take power into their own hands, and step in front of the camera in a story that they themselves have created. 

The short film can be one of the most powerful tools at the actor’s fingertips. A great short can not only make a performance all the buzz on the film festival circuit, but can open the floodgates of creativity in the process. One may discover that being an actor is part of their larger artistic identity — they’re also a writer, a director, or a producer — and had never given themselves the opportunity to realize it.

Making a short film starts with one crucial element: the story. A great script is everything. Without it, there is no reason for any of the hard work that follows. This course is designed to help students create something meaningful — to tap deep inside themselves, find their voice, their full potential as a storyteller, and bring it to the world.

The AMAW Short Film Lab is a mentoring experience that will take students through the art of screenwriting, beginning with the most important step — finding a great story idea. They will learn a foundation in the craft — including structure, theme, character, plot, voice, format, and process — with applicable lessons to actual independent short film production. They will emerge armed with an original screenplay, and the necessary tools to continue sculpting it toward independent production.
